Shakira Latin Grammy Person Of The Year 2011.

Congratulations, Shakira! The “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker is the Latin Grammy Person of the Year!

The Latin Recording Academy says it will honor the Colombian-born pop star at a ceremony in Las Vegas in next month. She is to be honored for her artistic and philanthropic contributions at a tribute dinner and concert at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center Nov. 9 — it’s all part of this year’s Latin Grammy week celebration. The celebration will precede the 12th annual Latin Grammy Awards — which will be broadcast live on the Univision Network Nov. 10 — where Shakira is up for three Latin Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
We are honored to pay homage to this dynamic, socially conscious woman whose illustrious career has touched so many people around the world, both musically and personally,” says Latin Recording Academy president Gabriel Abaroa, Jr.
Shakira, 34, rose to fame as a singer in the early 1990s combining rock, Latin and Mediterranean music with her electrifying dance moves. In typical tribute form, songs from Shakira’s catalog will be performed by her fellow artists and friends, event organizers said Monday. A portion of the net proceeds from the gala will benefit Shakira’s Pies Descalzos Foundation, as well as the academy’s Latin Grammy in the Schools educational efforts.
