The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference of ten schools located in the Central United States, with its headquarters located in Las Colinas, a community in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas. It is a member of the NCAA's Division I for all sports; its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A), the higher of two levels of NCAA Division I football competition. Member schools are located in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. In August of 2011, Texas A&M announced plans to apply to join another unspecified conference. Texas A&M's desire to leave the Big 12 was reportedly driven by archrival Texas' increasingly dominant position within the conference and concerns that the Longhorn Network would give Texas an unfair advantage in recruiting and other aspects of competition. In response, Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe announced that all remaining Big 12 members had agreed not to pursue legal action against A&M for their departure. Southeastern Conference officials voted to accept Texas A&M as its 13th team, conditional upon a reaffirmation that the remaining Big 12 schools would not pursue legal action to block the move. Iowa State and Baylor have not yet waived their rights to pursue legal action against the Southeastern Conference. The teams could sue the Southeastern Conference for tortious interference, which means that one party intentionally interferes with a contract between other parties.
The Big 12 Conference said it would form a committee to replace Texas A&M with at least one other school. Some of the schools that journalists have speculated the Big 12 Conference may invite include Brigham Young University, Southern Methodist University, University of Houston. University of Arkansas, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Notre Dame. While Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are reportedly considering a move to the Pacific-12 Conference, Pacific-12 Conference commissioner Larry Scott hopes that his conference does not add any schools. Scott said that his conference has not reached out to any schools, but some schools have reached out to his conference.
