Katy Perry Named MTV Artist of the Year

Katy Perry has been named MTV‘s “Artist of the Year” for 2011.

It’s the first time the network has handed out the honor.

MTV made the announcement on Thursday.

A seven-person panel selected Perry ahead of Nicki Minaj and other major talents.

Perry’s Teenage Dream album produced a record-tying five #1 singles, and videos including “Last Friday Night (TGIF)” and “E.T.” became major hits both online and on TV.

Her “Firework” won Video of the Year at last August’s VMAs.

Do you think of 2011 as the Year of Katy Perry
