The newlyweds waved to waiting fans as they left Westminster Register Office at around 4:30 PM local time. Crowds cheered as McCartney, dressed in a suit and tie, and Shevell, in an ivory dress designed by McCartney’s daughter Stella, left the building. McCartney’s former bandmate Ringo Starr, among the 30 family members and close friends invited to the wedding, gave a peace sign to fans as he arrived for the ceremony.
After the service, McCartney and Shevell were driven back to Sir Paul’s house in nearby St. John’s Wood for a reception expected to host about 135 guests.
This is the third marriage for the former Beatle. McCartney, 69, married his first wife, Linda Eastman, in 1969 at the same venue. The union ended when she died of breast cancer in 1998. His second marriage to English activist and former glamour model Heather Mills was steeped in bitterness that led to a massive divorce settlement in 2008.
