Constructive engagement urged

WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar urged US leaders on Sunday not to define their relations with Pakistan by the aid syndrome.

In an interview to , the foreign minister also advised US officials not to conduct diplomacy through the media and instead engage with Pakistan in a constructive manner.

“I think this relationship is over-defined by aid syndrome. I think your congressmen and your senators feel too strongly about the assistance that they give,” said Ms Khar when reminded of the aid Pakistan was receiving from the US.

The interviewer, Fareed Zakaria, blamed Pakistan for all the bad things happening in the region, reminding the foreign minister that whatever Islamabad was doing had turned the former US military chief, Admiral Mike Mullen, a long-time Pakistan ally, into an open critic.
